Citizens of Shawnee are dedicated to preserving their city’s heritage. Located at the intersection of the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, Shawnee offers a glimpse into our nation’s history. Near City Hall are structures and replicas of buildings that date back from the mid-1800s to early 1900s. These and other historical sites bring thousands of visitors from around the country to Shawnee each year.
The city is home to many contemporary attractions as well. The Wonderscope Children’s Museum, the JCGAA Sports Complex, an indoor ice skating arena and the Johnson County Museum of History provide plenty of opportunities for fun and educational enrichment. New parks and recreational centers have been newly constructed in Shawnee. The city is excited to have opened the Thomas A. Soeteart Aquatic Center, which averages 1,450 visitors a day. This significant park just west of I-435 lies in the heart of the most rapidly growing area and will be an excellent resource to families in and around Shawnee. Another facility new to Shawnee is the Park Lanes Family Fun Center, with 32 bowling lanes, an arcade, and a bar and grill. A popular outdoor destination is Mission Park with features including a 150-acre lake, horseback and nature trails, a beach, a marina and a theatre for summer stage productions. Residence of Shawnee enjoys 219 new and improved recreational programs within the city. The community’s camps, classes and sports are attended by more than 14,000 individuals annually. Shawnee is also committed to the education of its residents. The Shawnee public library is a valuable commodity to the city, especially since the fastest growing segment of Shawnee’s population is formed by young families. There are two school districts in Shawnee – DeSoto and Shawnee Mission – which have been named superior by presidential commissions. |
